The Australian Brushtailed Possum Trichosurus vulpecula was introduced into NZ in 1837 to establish a fur trade. Possums have now established themselves throughout NZ and are a mjor pest species. In some areas they are up to 20 times the density in Australia. Hardwood mixed forests are their major habitat, though they are often in urban environments. Possums often eat whole tree canopies out, compete with native fauna for food and carry TB.
