This beautiful bird, the Kakapo, is endemic to New Zealand and on the brink of extinction largely due to the unfortunate introduction of predators such as stoats, ferrets, rats, possums, cats and dogs. A situation compounded by the loss of habitat as pressure on land for new settlers required deforestation. This coupled with the Victorian eras desire for scientific advancement, and the need to fill the cabinets of curiosity abroad.
I have incorporated a number of images in silver around the focal point of the stoat creeping along the barrel of the gun as the Kakapo prepares to fire. The position of the stoat perhaps suggesting the outcome! I have used silver on the smaller images to represent moonlight as these beautiful parrots are nocturnal.
